Hampshire & the Solent

England · Game fishing & coast

The Test and Itchen are, without much argument, the most famous chalk streams in the world — this is literally where modern fly fishing was invented. Frederick Halford developed dry fly fishing on the Test's banks in the late 1800s, while 15 miles away George Skues pioneered nymph fishing on the Itchen. Both rivers remain in superb, closely-managed condition today, rated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest, with the Itchen also a Special Area of Conservation.

England holds 85% of the world's chalk streams, and Hampshire has the best of them — clear, mineral-rich, gravel-bedded water that supports huge insect hatches and, in turn, some of the finest wild brown trout fishing anywhere. Away from the chalk streams, the Hampshire Avon adds serious coarse fishing to the county's reputation, and the Solent coast gives genuine variety for the sea angler, from Southampton Water's triple estuary to piers and harbours right along the coast.

Chalk streams

River Test

The longest and most famous chalk stream in the UK at around 39 miles, rising near Ashe and flowing through Stockbridge, Mottisfont and Romsey to Southampton Water. Wild brown trout, grayling, and — on the lower river — salmon and a genuinely good run of sea trout.

Wild trout · Salmon

River Itchen

Shorter than the Test at around 17 miles, formed by the Alre, Tichborne and Candover Brook near Alresford before flowing through Winchester. Regarded by purists as the ultimate chalk stream, with prolific wild trout fishing and a strong salmon and sea trout run on its lower reaches.

Wild trout · Salmon

River Meon

The most easterly Hampshire chalk stream, rising near East Meon and flowing 21 miles to the Solent at Titchfield Haven. Steeper and faster-flowing than the Test or Itchen, officially rated a productive brown trout river.

Coarse fishing

Hampshire Avon

Famous for big barbel, roach and other coarse fish alongside its own trout and salmon fishing — the Royalty Fishery at Christchurch is nationally renowned and available on day ticket.

Coast

Southampton Water

The triple estuary where the Test, Itchen and Hamble meet — a genuinely varied mixed fishery in its own right, alongside black bream, bass, plaice, flounder, sole, dab, dogfish, mullet, mackerel and pollock along the wider Solent coast.

Portsmouth, Lymington & the Solent piers

Regular sea fishing trips leave from Havant, Portsmouth, Eastleigh, Lymington, Hayling Island, Southsea, Gosport, Christchurch and Chichester, alongside pier and harbour fishing for those who'd rather stay on dry land.

General guide only — the Test and Itchen are almost entirely privately owned and fished via beats, syndicates or day tickets booked well in advance; walk-up access is rare. Always confirm current permits, season dates and any local rules directly with the relevant fishery, estate or the Test & Itchen Association before fishing.
