The Munster Blackwater is the headline water here — Ireland's third-longest river at 169km, rising in the Kerry mountains and flowing east through Mallow, Fermoy and Lismore to the sea at Youghal. Nicknamed "the Irish Rhine," it was declared Ireland's most prolific salmon river in 1998 with over 8,000 rod-caught fish that year, and as a large, mature river it fishes well even in low water, unlike the smaller spate rivers that dominate much of the west coast.
Cork city itself sits on the River Lee, which offers a genuine urban salmon fishery on its 8-mile ESB-managed stretch, while County Kerry adds an entirely different kind of water in the Lakes of Killarney — Lough Leane, Muckross Lake and the Upper Lake — set in genuinely spectacular scenery and holding one of the country's rarer fish, the critically endangered Irish char.
Ireland's most prolific salmon river historically, flowing through Mallow, Fermoy and Lismore to the sea at Youghal. Best fishing typically between the tidal limit at Lismore and Mallow. Also holds decent, if generally modest-sized, brown trout. Season 1 Feb–30 Sept on most fisheries.
Salmon · TroutRuns through Cork City itself — an 8-mile ESB-managed fishery between the city and Inniscarra dam, with a fair salmon run (estimated at around 800 fish landed per season) and a good grilse run, plus brown trout. Requires an ESB permit.
Salmon · TroutDrains the Killarney Lakes system out to Killarney Bay — excellent salmon and grilse fishing, with sea trout largely confined to this river within the wider system.
Salmon · Sea troutNot to be confused with the much larger Munster Blackwater — a short river rising at Lough Brin in County Kerry, receiving a run of around 1,500 salmon and grilse a year plus a good run of sea trout.
Salmon · Sea troutThe largest of the Killarney Lakes — classic wild brown trout drift fishing with wet flies, early-season salmon runs and summer sedge fishing, with boat access from Ross Castle.
Trout · SalmonIreland's deepest lake at 75 metres — a noted salmon and brown trout fishery, and home to the critically endangered, endemic blunt-snouted Irish char.
Trout · SalmonConsidered by many the foremost sea trout and salmon fishery in Ireland — sea trout over 10lb are recorded most years. Part of a wider system including Lough Derriana and the Cummeragh River.
Sea trout · SalmonWhere the Blackwater meets the sea — a genuine bass hotspot with prolific summer mackerel, flounder and winter codling from both beach and harbour wall.
General guide only — coarse fishing in the Republic of Ireland is free and requires no state licence, but salmon and sea trout fishing requires a state licence plus, in most cases, a local permit. Statutory size limits and bag limits apply and vary by fishery. Always confirm current rules and access directly before fishing.
